Straight answers

The questions people actually ask.

A quick verdict, the rough numbers, and a plain-English guide if you want the detail. No jargon, no sales pitch.

It depends
Should I get a heat pump?

Great in the right home. Your insulation, radiators and tariff decide whether it beats a boiler on running cost.

It depends
Are smart thermostats worth it?

Pays off if your schedule varies or the house sits empty in the day. Less so if you already heat carefully.

Double or single glazing: what do the stats say?

The energy saving alone pays back slowly. The real value is comfort, condensation and noise. We show the full picture.

Usually not. For most homes, heating only when you need it costs less than a constant low temperature. We show the exception.

Figures are illustrative while we finish our UK running-cost research. Every number will carry its source and the date checked before it goes live, and where good sources disagree we show the range and cite them.

Why trust the number

No black box. The calculation is right there.

The same inputs always give the same answer, because the maths is fixed code, not a guess. You see every assumption and can change it.

heat_demand = 12,000 kWh SCOP = 3.2 elec = 24.5 p/kWh boiler = 90% gas = 6.4 p/kWh
Change SCOP to 4.0 and electricity to 20 p on a heat-pump tariff, and the heat pump moves from £66 dearer to about £250 cheaper a year. That sensitivity is the whole point.
Heat pump vs gas boilerv1.0
Heat pump electricity3,750 kWh
  = 12,000 ÷ 3.2 (SCOP)
Heat pump running cost£919
Boiler fuel13,333 kWh
